Educational: Emergency Fundraising with Sported

Wil Woan has been a mentor for Sported for a number of years and during the current pandemic and the pressures it has put on the voluntary sector he decided to offer his skills and experience in a webinar. Working in partnership with Sported, the free event was delivered to over 40 groups providing advice on fundraising and the complexities of what makes a good funding application.

Due to the COVID19 virus many of Sported’s members have been struggling to provide sporting activities for their members and maintain funding revenue. In particular, children and young peoples’ lives have suddenly become virtual and sports groups are quickly changing their provision to accommodate sport and exercise in people’s own homes.

Tom Burstow, Deputy CEO of Sported said “Wil has a brilliant background in developing small grass roots fund applications for the voluntary sector and is a valued Sported mentor. When Wil offered to deliver a webinar to our members we jumped at the chance knowing that practical support on developing strong applications was critical for our members during this time. Wilspent years assessing Lottery sports bids and has secured funding successes for others within the sports sector and a number of sports clubs so we knew our members would be getting great insight into what makes a good bid.”

A number of the groups received 15 mins one-to-one mentoring sessions to discuss their specific funding needs and sustainability of their organisation. The current financial pressures and changing needs to deliver activities in a lock-down world means that many voluntary organisations need emergency funding and Wil hopes that many of them go onto secure the much-needed funds.

“Attending this webinar has given me inspiration and realisation that despite their being a crisis and certain restrictions on everyday life there is chance to re-evaluate how we provide our services. Wil’s understanding of sporting organisations as whole, as well as his experience with developing grants and bids, means we receive advice not just on writing a good bid but how we use the funding and how we make the best of a situation.” Rashid Hussain, Development Manager.
